Keeping your records safe

Making it harder for the fraudsters

You always lock your home when you leave it empty. In the same way, there are some steps you can take to keep your online information safe.

Keep your software up to date

Make sure your antivirus software is updated regularly - that way you'll be better prepared to combat new threats. Keep your web browser up to date as well, and set your computer to automatically download and install new security updates.

Always log out when you've finished

Don't just close the browser window. By logging out fully you can make sure your computer is no longer connected to an online banking server.

Don't leave your computer unattended when you're logged in, especially at your workplace or in a public place where others may be watching you.

Be careful when using a public computer

If you're using someone else's PC or a computer in a cafe or library, don't use it for changing your security details. You should only ever do this on your home computer, where you know that no-one else has access.

What happens if someone steals your details?

Once you've told us that someone knows your security details, you'll not be held responsible for any future activity on your account, so long as you've not acted fraudulently or with gross negligence. If you don't keep your security information secret, this may be considered grossly negligent.

Bank safe online

Gross is the contractual rate of interest payable before the deduction of income tax at the rate specified by law.

*AER stands for Annual Equivalent Rate and illustrates what the interest rate would be if interest was paid and compounded once each year. As every advertisement for a savings product which quotes an interest rate will contain an AER, you will be able to compare more easily what return you can expect from your savings over time.

NET rates are illustrative only, allowing for the deduction of income tax at 20%. If you are a higher rate tax payer, you may have a further amount to pay. If we deduct more tax than you have to pay this can be reclaimed from HMRC.

Tax Free means free from personal liability to Income Tax.
